‘I Feel Proud.’ Chinese Scientist Addresses Controversial Gene-Edited Babies

A Chinese doctor who claims to have engineered the world’s first successful birth of genetically modified humans said he was “proud” of the historic feat, despite widespread backlash from the medical and scientific communities.

In his first public remarks since revealing the rogue achievement, Chinese biologist He Jiankui on Wednesday outlined the DNA manipulation he performed. He said he altered the genetic instructions in two human embryos to try to make them resistant to HIV infections. He claimed the gene-edited twin girls were born earlier this month.

“Lulu and Nana were born normal and healthy,” he told a rapt audience at a Human Genome Editing Conference in Hong Kong, referring to the twins by pseudonyms.

Then came a surprising, second twist: He says his trial has resulted in “another potential pregnancy” of a genetically-edited human, though that pregnancy is in very early stages.

A Colossal Australian Cow That Wowed the Internet Will Be Saved From Slaughter

(LAKE PRESTON, Australia) — Knickers the steer is huge on the internet — for being huge.

The black-and-white Holstein Friesian won social media fame and many proclamations of “Holy Cow!” after photos surfaced of the 194-cm (6-ft.-4-in.) steer standing head and shoulders above a herd of brown cattle in Western Australia state.

Owner Geoff Pearson said Knickers was too heavy to go to the slaughterhouse.

“We have a high turnover of cattle, and he was lucky enough to stay behind,” Pearson said.

Australian media say Knickers is believed to be the tallest steer in the country and weighs about 1.4 tons.

Instead of becoming steaks and burgers, 7-year-old Knickers will get to live out his life in Pearson’s fields in Lake Preston, southwest of Perth.

British Teenager Charged Over Assault of 15-Year-Old Syrian Refugee

A 16-year-old British boy is being charged with assault after a video circulated widely on social media of him attacking a boy, believed to be a Syrian refugee, at school.

The video taken at a school in Huddersfield, northern England, caused outrage on social media when it was posted on social media Tuesday. It shows two students on a school playing field. One boy approaches the other, pulling him to the ground and pouring water over his face as other children run towards them. The victim then gets up and walks away alone.

West Yorkshire Police said the incident had taken place on Oct. 25 and that they were investigating a report of racially-aggravated assault. They added the 16-year-old will appear at Youth Court “in due course.”

Police said that a previous incident, in which the same victim suffered a wrist injury, had also been investigated. In the video, the victim is seen wearing a cast on his wrist.

A local lawmaker called the video “absolutely shocking” and said the local go..

Na konci století by čeští muži mohli žít o více než 11 let déle než nyní, tedy do 88 let, a ženy o deset let déle,tedy do 92 let. Zároveň však bude populace Česka přirozeně ubývat, zejména v polovině 60. let. Přírůstky obyvatel do konce století dokáže zajistit jedině zahraniční migrace. Vyplývá to z projekcí, které ve středu zveřejnil Český statistický úřad (ČSÚ).
