British Prime Minister Theresa May to Face a No-Confidence Vote Amid Brexit Chaos

(LONDON) — Conservative lawmakers in Britain will hold a no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday that will see her removed as party and government leader if she loses.

Graham Brady, who heads a committee overseeing Conservative leadership contests, said he had received letters from at least 48 lawmakers asking for a vote.

As a result, he said, “the threshold of 15 percent of the parliamentary party seeking a vote of confidence in the leader of the Conservative Party has been exceeded.”

Brady said the vote would be held in Parliament Wednesday evening, with the results announced soon after.

The announcement throws Britain’s already rocky path out of the European Union, which it is due to leave in March, into further chaos.

Many Tory lawmakers have been growing angry with May over her handling of Brexit, and the challenge comes days after she postponed a vote to approve a divorce deal with the EU to avoid all-but-certain defeat.

Japan Wants to Fly Fighters Off an Aircraft Carrier for the First Time Since World War II

(TOKYO) — Japan is seeking to possess its first aircraft carrier to allow for the deployment of U.S.-made stealth fighters as it seeks to bolster its arms capability under a new 10-year defense plan.

A draft outline of Japan’s new defense plan, presented by the government Tuesday, proposes refitting an existing helicopter carrier into one that can deploy U.S.-made F-35 stealth fighters capable of short take-offs and vertical landings.

A candidate would be the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s helicopter carrier Izumo, a 250-meter (820-foot) -long warship that can carry 14 helicopters.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is scrapping the current program after only five years, citing rapid changes in a security environment that requires higher deterrence to cope with threats from North Korea and China.

The new National Defense Program Guidelines are expected next week.

The draft outline says Japan needs more STOVLS such as F-35Bs to beef up its air defense capability in the Pacific, while expandi..

Canadian Judge Grants Huawei CFO $7.5 Million Bail as U.S. Seeks Extradition

Huawei Technologies Co. Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was granted bail by a Canadian court, allowing the executive to stay in her Vancouver home as she awaits a possible extradition to the U.S. over fraud charges.

Justice William Ehrcke of the British Columbia Supreme Court agreed to release Meng after four former colleagues and friends joined her husband in pledging a combined C$10 million ($7.5 million) in cash and home equity to support her bail request. By agreeing to act as “sureties,” the five people commit to ensuring she doesn’t flee and abides by other bail terms. Meng, 46, will be subject to surveillance at her Vancouver home by a combination of security guards and technology as part of the agreement, and surrendered her Chinese and Hong Kong passports.

Ehrcke said he is satisfied the conditions of the bail reduce the risk that Meng will flee the country before the extradition proceedings.
