Roger Federer Was Just Dethroned as the Top Prize Money Earner in Tennis

Roger Federer got hit with a one-two punch of defeat and disappointment this week at the U.S. Open.

First, the Swiss tennis icon lost the tournament on Tuesday, getting knocked out in the fourth round by Australian John Millman. Then, on Sunday, Serbian Novak Djokovic won the championship, earning $3.8 million and officially unseating Federer as the tennis player with the most career prize money.

The pair have been locked in a back-and-forth battle for the title of top prize earner for years, with Djokovic passing Federer in 2016 before falling behind in 2017. As of Sunday night, Djokovic has been awarded $119,110,890 in prizes, according to the Association of Tennis Professionals. Federer, 37, is now at $117,773,812.

Trump Adviser Threatens Syria With ‘Much Stronger’ Military Assault If It Uses Chemical Weapons

President Donald Trump’s national security adviser warned the Syrian government against using chemical weapons in the impending battle for Idlib Province, the last remaining rebel stronghold populated by more than 2 million people.

If chemical weapons are used, National Security Adviser John Bolton promised the U.S. would deliver a counterattack that’s more severe than the two previous assaults authorized by Trump.

“We’ve tried to convey the message in recent days that if there’s a third use of chemical weapons, the response will be much stronger,” Bolton said in a speech on Monday in Washington. “I can say we’ve been in consultations with the British and the French who have joined us in the second strike and they also agree that another use of chemical weapons will result in a much stronger response.”

Syrian forces, backed by Russia and Iran, have been massing for weeks around Idlib’s borders where the last bastion of Islamist-dominated rebel groups is seeking refuge and posing the..

White House Is Working on a Second Trump-Kim Summit After North Korean Leader Asks to Meet Again

(WASHINGTON) — President Donald Trump has received a request from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a follow-up to their historic June summit, and planning is in motion to make it happen.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that no details had been finalized.
Trump had told reporters last week that he was expecting a letter from Kim. Sanders said Trump has received the letter, which she described as “very warm, very positive.” The White House will not release the full letter unless Kim agrees it should be made public, she said.

“The primary purpose of the letter was to request and look to schedule another meeting with the president, which we are open to and are already in the process of coordinating that,” Sanders said at her first press briefing in nearly three weeks. She cited the letter as “further evidence of progress” in relations between the leaders.

Relations between Trump and Kim have seemed to ebb and flow since Trump became the first sitting U…

Dozens Killed in Taliban Attacks on Afghan Security Forces, Officials Say

(KABUL, Afghanistan) — Taliban insurgents have launched separate attacks on Afghan security forces in the country’s north, killing at least 37, provincial officials said Monday.

Mohammad Yusouf Ayubi, head of the provincial council in Kunduz province, said that at least 13 security forces were killed in an attack on a checkpoint they were manning in Dashti Archi district, with another 15 security forces wounded there. The firefight began late Sunday and continued into Monday morning.

Meanwhile in Jawzjan province, Provincial Police Chief Gen. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani said the Taliban attacked Khamyab district from different directions, forcing Afghan forces to withdraw from the district headquarters to avoid civilian causalities.

“There was intense fighting and we didn’t want civilian houses destroyed, or any civilian casualties,” said Jawzjani. He said that at least eight policemen were killed and three other police were wounded. Seven Taliban were killed and eight were wounded duri..

Human Rights Watch Warns of ‘Massive Crackdown’ on China’s Muslims

Human Rights Watch said Monday it has evidence that the Chinese government is carrying out a “systematic campaign” of rights abuses against Turkic Muslims living in the country’s western Xinjiang Province, accusing authorities of arbitrary detention, torture and far-reaching controls over everyday life.

The group said in a report that Xinjiang’s Muslim population of about 13 million has been subjected to “forced political indoctrination, collective punishment, restrictions on movement and communications, heightened religious restrictions, and mass surveillance in violation of international human rights law.”

The government controls primarily affect ethnic Uighurs, Kazakhs and other minorities, the report said.

“The Chinese government is committing human rights abuses in Xinjiang on a scale unseen in the country in decades,” said Sophie Richardson, China director at HRW.

“The campaign of repression in Xinjiang is key test of whether the United Nations and concerned governments will ..

Cambodia’s Opposition Leader Has Been Released on Bail After a Year Behind Bars

Cambodia’s opposition leader has been released on bail after spending a year behind bars on charges broadly viewed as politically motivated, an apparent gesture of leniency toward government critics following a flawed election that cemented the ruling party’s power.

Kem Sokha, 65, was jailed in September last year on treason charges for allegedly conspiring with foreign powers to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

His arrest in a dramatic midnight raid came amid a crackdown on the opposition and civil society members that saw rights defenders and domestic media muzzled, the main opposition party dissolved and its members barred from politics or driven into exile.

Facing few challengers, Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won all 125 contested seats in July elections broadly viewed as a farce. The U.S. condemned the poll as “neither free nor fair.” Sokha’s Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) called it the “death of democracy” in Cambodia.

Sokha’s sudden rele..

Seven People Have Been Injured in a Knife Attack in Paris

(PARIS) — Seven people were injured in a knife attack in central Paris late Sunday but police said that terrorism was not suspected.

Two British tourists were among those injured, broadcaster BFMTV and Le Parisien newspaper reported.

Authorities were trying to determine if the attacker, who was arrested, is among the seven injured.

An overnight police press officer said the attack took place near a cinema in the 19th district of Paris. The officer had no information about the identities of the injured. The Paris prosecutors’ office is handling the investigation.

The reports said the man was armed with a knife and a metal bar, and first attacked three people outside the cinema.

Sweden’s Far-Right Party Gains Support, but Not as Much as Some Feared

(STOCKHOLM) — Sweden’s ruling party was headed for its worst showing in decades as voters flocked Sunday to an anti-immigrant party with white supremacist roots that was poised to become the third-biggest force in parliament.

With more than four-fifths of ballots counted, Sweden’s national election commission reported the governing Social Democrats had 28.1 percent of the vote, making it likely to lose a significant number of seats despite emerging with the most support.

The Moderates party was next at 19.2 percent, while the far-right Sweden Democrats that before the election inspired fear of an anti-migrant backlash that would produce a dramatic ideological swing had 17.9 percent.

The Sweden Democrats received 13 percent of vote in the last election held four years ago.

The results Sunday made it unlikely any single party would secure a majority of the 175 seats in the Riksdagen, Sweden’s parliament. It could take weeks or months of coalition talks before the next government is f..

Police Find Three Toddlers Among Five Dead in Australia Family Murder

Five people, including three toddlers, were found dead in a suburban home in Western Australia in a shocking mass killing that follows a spate of recent family tragedies, police confirmed Monday.

Officers discovered the remains of the three young girls, as well as their mother and grandmother, in the family’s home in Perth, Agence France-Presse reports.

A man in his 20s had alerted the regional police station to the case. His connection to the family has not been disclosed, and while he remains in custody, no charges have been pressed, according to officials.

Western Australia police told AFP that the “five people killed were twin two-year-old girls, a three and a half-year-old girl, their mother and grandmother.”

According to a neighbor, when he returned from a vacation he found his street lacked the usual boisterousness of young children playing.

“We noticed that the house next door was pretty quiet, which was unusual, being that they had the young kids,” Richard Fairbrother, wh..

You Can Eat Breakfast For $1 at IKEA. Here Are the Best (and Worst) Things to Order

After browsing and shopping through the seemingly endless floors and departments of an IKEA, it’d be inhuman if you weren’t hungry. Over the years, IKEA has become known for its surprisingly delicious offerings at its in-store restaurants, where eating Swedish meatballs, to go along with shopping for minimalist Scandinavian-style furniture, has become a rite of passage. And while the cafe atmosphere and trays may not be glamorous, the prices are hard to beat. We talked to current and former IKEA employees who gave the lowdown on what to get and what to skip.

Value is easy to snag at the IKEA restaurant.

IKEA is ultimately a retail company interested in dominating, well, the entire world of affordable home furnishings. So its cafes are not focused on extracting every possible buck out of customers. “The food at IKEA is sold at the lowest possible prices as the restaurant is really a way to keep people happy while shopping, and so a high profit is not the most important thing,” a form..

Pope Francis Tells Newly-Ordained Bishops to Fight Abuse and the Culture Behind It

(VATICAN CITY) — Pope Francis told newly ordained bishops Saturday that they must reject all forms of abuse and work in communion to fight the clerical culture that has fueled the sex abuse and cover-up scandal rocking his papacy.

Francis cited his recent letter about combatting abuse during an audience with 74 new bishops from 34 developing countries. The bishops were in Rome for training this week.

Their seminar took place during a crisis for the pope: a lone archbishop has alleged Francis covered up for a now-former U.S. cardinal who was accused of sexually molesting children and adult seminarians.

Francis has ignored calls from clergy and ordinary faithful to respond directly to the claims, saying there were times when “silence and prayer” were the best response.

However, the pontiff spoke in a general way about the Catholic Church’s abuse scandal to the new bishops. Many of them hail from dioceses where mishandled clerical abuse cases haven’t erupted publicly like it has in th..

Pompeo Has Received The Letter From Kim Jong Un That President Trump Was Expecting

(WASHINGTON) — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (pahm-PAY’-oh) has received the letter that President Donald Trump has said he was expecting from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (kim jawng oon).

A State Department official is confirming that Pompeo has the letter. It’s not immediately clear whether it’s been delivered to Trump.

Pompeo returned early Friday from India. Trump was in Montana and the Dakotas on Friday before a late return to the White House.

The official wasn’t authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive diplomacy between the U.S. and North Korea and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Trump has said Kim’s recent statement that he wants to denuclearize North Korea during Trump’s tenure as president was “a very positive statement.”

More Than 18,000 March in Paris to Show Support for Climate Change Ahead of California Summit

(PARIS) — More than 18,000 people marched Saturday in Paris as part of an international mobilization to show popular support for urgent measures to combat climate change in advance of a San Francisco summit.

Crowds overflowed a plaza in front of City Hall before marching east to the Place de la Republique, carrying an urgent message that it’s up to the public to put global warming at the top of the political agenda.

“Planet in Danger,” read some banners.

Activists around the world encouraged “Rise for Climate” protests before the summit taking place Sept.12-Sept. 14. California’s governor proposed the event after President Donald Trump vowed to pull the U.S. out of a landmark 2015 climate accord.

The international agreement was negotiated in France, and the French capital’s march was more successful than ones held Saturday in other French cities or elsewhere in Europe.

Thousands of people took to the streets of San Francisco, marching about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from the city’s..

5 Emerging Markets Bracing for a Tough Fall

In last week’s Risk Report, I wrote about the awful summers Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Argentina’s Mauricio Macri were having. Now, their autumns look to be even worse. But at least they’ll have company—here are five emerging markets bracing for tough months ahead:

Brazil
Like many other developing nations, Brazil benefited mightily from China’s meteoric rise. The commodities supercycle that Beijing fueled was a boon to resource-rich Brazil’s GDP… and to its corrupt politicians. The sprawling Lava Jato (Car Wash) corruption investigation—centered on the hundreds of millions paid by Brazilian construction giants to secure government contracts—and its related investigative offshoots has led to the convictions of more than 200 politicians and executives, and forced President Dilma Rousseff from office in August 2016. Brazil’s political system has yet to recover.

Case in point: Ahead of elections in October, the current presidential frontrunner is former President Luiz Inacio Lula..

What to Know About Sweden’s 2018 Elections

Rich, happy, stable, perhaps a little dull. Our utopian image of Sweden, with the world’s third highest standard of living and a famous welfare state, seems impervious to the kinds of dramatic political cleavages and populist insurgents that have swept the U.S. and much of Europe in recent years. But at parliamentary elections on Sunday, the far-right is likely to be a major player. Here’s what to know.

When are Sweden’s elections?
Voting takes place on Sunday, September 9 for the 349 members of the Riksdag, Sweden’s legislative chamber. Results are due in early on Monday.

Who are the main parties?
Around a fifth of Swedes are expected to vote for the Sweden Democrats, a populist anti-immigrant party with neo-Nazi roots led by 39-year-old Jimmie Åkesson.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven’s center-left Social Democrats, one of the last avowedly social democratic parties in power in Europe, are likely to get their lowest vote share in over a century. They have come first in ev..

President Trump Says He’s Ready to Tax an Additional $267 Billion in Chinese Imports

(WASHINGTON) — President Donald Trump said Friday that he’s prepared to impose tariffs on an additional $267 billion in Chinese imports. Such a step would significantly escalate his trade war with Beijing and would likely increase costs for a broad range of U.S. businesses and consumers.

Those potential tariffs would come on top of tariffs Trump has said he’s poised to slap on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods — everything from handbags to bicycle tires. It would also be in addition to tariffs his administration has already imposed on $50 billion in Chinese imports, for which Beijing has retaliated with an equal amount of import taxes on U.S. goods.

“I hate to say this, but behind that there is another $267 billion ready to go on short notice if I want,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “That totally changes the equation.”

The trade war the president has initiated between the world’s two largest economies stems from concerns that China has deployed predatory tactics — includ..
